Christmas is a lovely time of year to make something with your child to give as a gift. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune after all it’s the thought that counts. The memories it creates and the lessons of kindness, giving and sharing help to spread some Christmas spirit. These homemade salt dough decorations are easy to make and can be personalised in colour and design.
As a child I always loved and felt proud of giving something to someone that I had made with care and love. This is something I want to teach my little one about. It has always been a privilege to be given a homemade gift from someone, who obviously held you in high regard to put you on their homemade gift list! Our family Christmas tree is covered in homemade creations, collected and made over the years, all with their own personal story and it’s so special, despite being totally uncoordinated!
What do you need to make the salt dough?
This year we have decided to make salt dough tree decorations (not edible!). We simply mixed – 1/2 cup of salt, 1/2 cup of water and 1 cup of plain flour into a bowl, adding the water a bit at a time to the dry ingredients, then mixed and squished them together until we ended up with a ball of dough.
How do you make the salt dough decorations?
We then rolled the dough out on a flat surface. Cut out Christmas themed shapes using cookie cutters and put a hole at the top of each shape for hanging. We went for Christmas trees, stockings, gingerbread men, stars and angels. We then cooked the salt dough on gas mark 2 or 3 for about 3 hours in the oven. Apparently you can also cook the in the microwave (google for details) as we haven’t tried this method!
Next we painted the decorations when cool and we added a bit of sparkly glitter and then let them dry. We then threaded the decorations with wool for hanging.
Making salt dough decorations was a great activity, slightly messy but a great way to make some inexpensive little Christmas gifts and some homemade decorations for your tree or home.
