When we went for a walk at Simon’s Wood we also discovered Finchampstead Ridges on the map, so decided to go walking at Finchampstead Ridges on a separate occasion, as we noticed there were several ‘vantage points’ identified on the map and were keen to go and check out the view.
Where did we walk?
From the lay-by where you park, we headed onto the heathland to the left of the car. Here there was a stone which showed you how far away local town were. Then we walked directly ahead to one of the vantage points and my eldest said ‘wow, we can see the whole world’. There was a great view overlooking Surrey and you could see aircraft from Blackbushe Airport flying in the sky.
After admiring the view we walked to our left and went down the large hill. We then did a large circuit through the woods and back up the hill to the car. I would say we walked for a 45minute – 1 hour walk. It’s hard to say exactly how long it took us as we stopped to explore the woods several times. The paths were pretty straight forward to follow and we also found a map half way round the woods. You can take a number of different routes however, so you might want to take a photo of the map (which is next to the lay-by where you park the car) on your phone. In the woods we found boardwalks, a pond and dens. When reaching the top of the hill we admired the view again.
There aren’t any facilities at this site.We did take our off road buggy but it wasn’t ideal just because the walk was steep both down and up hill and in hindsight we should have taken the baby carrier. The walk is dog friendly.
Where can I park?
There is limited parking in a lay-by along Wellington Avenue (B3348) which is free of charge and right next to the walk but there is not an actual car park. Wellington Avenue is a fast road so be careful getting out of the car especially with children and dogs. You can also walk from the car park at Simon’s Wood, but you also have to cross the B3348.
