Symmetrical Leaf Drawings

Nature is amazing and it gives us so many learning opportunities.

What resources do I need for this activity?

Pick some leaves of different shapes and sizes.
PVA Glue.
A Pen.
A pair of scissors.

How do I do this activity?
  1. Pick a collection of leaves – different shapes and sizes.
  2. Cut the leaves in half.
  3. Stick the leaves onto a pice of paper. Make sure they are well spaced out.
  4. Draw the missing half of the leaf (see picture).
  5. Look at the detail on the leaf and try to copy it on the other half of the leaf. Remember leaves are symmetrical so it will be a mirror image.

Extension Activity

Why not colour in your drawn leaves – you could match the colour of the leaves you have copied or pick a different colour leaf.

Can you identify the leaves you have picked and write the names under the leaves you have picked? (If you google Leaf Identification Sheet lots of options come up).

Please make sure that the activity is supervised at all times. Only use materials that are age appropriate for those participating in the craft or activity. Also, make sure you avoid anything that may cause an issue with regards to allergies.
