I always wish I could take stunning photography and am in awe of talented photographers – Iona Eirlys Photography is certainly one of those, her work is captivating and it has been really interesting to interview Iona who is also listed in The Berkshire Mummies Directory. I just love that how Iona uses her photography to pause time to hold onto those precious moments for that little bit longer.
Tell me a bit about you and your business?
I’m Iona (eye-oh-na) a family, newborn and maternity photographer obsessed with chasing light, connecting with souls and capturing emotion. If photography was a love language, it most certainly would be mine. I capture all the joyful and love filled moments of family life. But I go further than just capture these moments, I create them and turn them into beautiful works of art that you will cherish forever.
How long have you been doing family photography for?
My photography journey started back when I was just a small child – I think it must be in my DNA! With a camera in my hands from about age 7, I learnt to notice and appreciate the little things in life. Whether that be the way the condensation on a window sparkles in the sun, or an abstract reflection of a building in a muddy puddle, or even the pattern of freckles on my Mum’s arms, I sought out the beauty in everything and anything.
I started photographing families in late 2018 but only went full time in September 2020 – right in the middle of the pandemic! Throughout this journey I have connected with and photographed so many wonderful families and souls. And I am so excited to connect with many more in the coming years!
Why family photography?
Photography is a lifetime passion of mine, so I thought why not combine my love for photography with my love for family! My Grandpa was a photography hobbyist, and when he sadly passed away a number of years a go, I chose to continue his legacy through my photography which has now evolved into a business.
I am family oriented and value every moment I share with loved ones. Making memories and documenting these precious moments, is so very important to me. We all wish we could press pause from time to time and hold onto these moments for that little bit longer, but with photography you can do just that.
Everyone deserves to have beautiful family portraits that capture more than just what you look like. They should capture the heart and soul of your family and the indescribable love you have for one another. They should capture all the joy, chaos, happiness, imperfection, emotion, connection, tenderness, passion and beauty family life brings. And this is exactly what I do and why I do it… I want to create everlasting memories that won’t just hold a special place in your heart, but can hang in a special place in your home forever.
How would you describe your photography style?
Joyful, soulful, natural, fun and relaxed! I will always capture that ‘picture-perfect-everyone-smiling-at-the-camera’ portrait, but the focus in all my sessions is to create the most authentic, natural and emotive photographs with your loved ones – these are the moments that you’ll want to remember.
With this natural yet fun loving approach, I love using the great outdoors as a beautiful backdrop for my photo sessions. In particular, grassy expanses and flower filled meadows. My style also has a lot to do with the light I choose to photograph in. Sunset, or golden hour, is my favourite time of day to shoot – the golden light creates the most magical effect!
Who do you like photographing?
I couldn’t possibly choose my favourite type of session to photograph – I really do love them all!
Family photoshoots tend to be filled with so much energy, fun and joy. There is always an element of the unexpected, especially when little ones are involved, which I love. I enjoy connecting with each family member and getting to the core of who they are. I love capturing the chaos of family life and watching all the love and joy unfold in front of me.
Newborn sessions are just gorgeous! They are heart warming and soul filling. I mean who wouldn’t want to photograph a sweet little baby all day!? Bringing a tiny human into the world is a beautiful and extraordinary moment for any family, and to be given the honour to capture this is a true privilege.
Maternity sessions are equally as magical. They tend to be a little bit more relaxed and rather romantic – or silly if that’s what you like! It’s a wonderful experience to document the beginnings of a couples journey to Motherhood or Fatherhood.
Where do you take your photos?
Berkshire has so many stunning and unspoilt outdoor locations, that I regularly use. Throughout the year I scout out a number of places to ensure I select the best location for each session based on the season, light, what’s in bloom and the needs of my clients.
My favourite spots are daisy meadows, blossom orchards and long grassy fields.
What should families bring to their photoshoot?
With every one of my sessions, I provide a printable checklist with everything you may need to bring to your session. This includes a bottle of water, sun cream in warmer months, extra layers in colder months, nappies, milk and wipes for babies/toddlers, a toy for little ones, spare comfy shoes if needed and don’t forget the snacks! But other than that all I ask is for you to bring your lovely selves, ready and excited for your photoshoot.
How far in advance should a family book at shoot with you?
Throughout the year I can get booked up months in advance, so if you have a specific time of year in mind or a baby on the way, get in touch as soon as you can. You can also join my mailing list to be the first to hear about availability and upcoming sessions.
What is the most popular session you offer?
It varies a lot throughout the year, but generally family sessions are the ones I do the most. The most popular type of family session are my Summer sunset meadow sessions and my Autumn minis. My Autumn mini sessions, in particular, are always a hit and get booked up fast every year.
Which areas in Berkshire do you cover?
Everywhere! I am based in Bracknell but cover all of Berkshire, including Windsor, Ascot, Reading, Wokingham, Newbury, Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Winkfield, Binfield and all the rest!
A question I ask at the end of all my interviews… what are your three favourite places to visit in Berkshire?
Windsor has to be one of my favourite places to visit in Berkshire. The historic town always makes for a special day or evening out – whether that is a girly day of shopping, a walk by the river or a romantic evening meal, it is a place where I have experienced many wonderful memories.
South Hill Park in Bracknell is another great spot for a day or evening out. Not only are there plenty of beautiful grounds to walk through (and photograph!), there is always something fun to do. They have a lovely restaurant and bar area to enjoy a tasty meal or drink, they have regular free exhibits of local artists’ work, they have numerous classes and courses throughout the year to learn something new, and to top it all off they have a wonderful theatre and comedy cellar!
My final favourite place (or places) would have to be one of the many National Trust beauties we have in Berkshire. I’ve had a membership for a many number of years in which I have found some of my favourite places to go for a day out including Cliveden, Basildon Park and Greys Court where I spent my 18th birthday.
