A Berkshire Mumprenuer // Victoria Byrne, Made At 42

Tell me briefly about your business?

Made At 42 is based in Wokingham, Berkshire. We make bunting for all occasions to buy or hire and we also offer a range of vintage china to hire.

Tell me briefly about yourself and your family?

I am Victoria, owner of Made At 42 and live in Wokingham with my husband and our 9 year old son.

When did you set up your business and why?

I set up Made At 42 in 2015, it started when I had been making some bunting for my family & friends, after a few lovely comments from friends that I should make it to sell I decided to try just that! I was so excited when I sold my first item it grew from there. I left my career in I.T. when I had my son and set up Made At 42 as a part time venture to allow me the flexibility to work yet be on able to still be at home when needed.

What do you see as the benefits of being self-employed?

The benefits of being self-employed are that it allows me to manage my own time so much more efficiently than when I was employed. I am able to work the hours I choose to ensure I manage my deadlines effectively yet also be at able to do the school run, attend events and sports days without worrying about taking time off.

How do you manage to run your business and look after your family?

Running your own business with a family certainly involves a lot of juggling. I manage my time carefully and we have a large family planner to try and ensure we all know where and when things are happening, this works most of the time! My family are very supportive and that helps massively.

What are your top tips to other parents considering setting up their own business?

Do something you enjoy! – I love my job, it doesn’t even feel like work most of the time and I think that’s probably the best bit.

What’s next for your business?

I am thrilled with the way 2018 went and am building on that for 2019, we are busy taking bookings for both bunting and china as well as developing new bunting ranges for the online shop. I have been lucky enough to win a few small business awards this year which have been an amazing boost for a small business – we recently were chosen by Theo Paphitis for his Small Business Sunday award and have been invited to his annual event in early 2019 which is hugely exciting!

Finally, what are your top three things to do as a family in Berkshire?

1. Basildon Park, we are National Trust members and love going here for a walk in the woods or to visit an event/trail they have on in the house.

2. Simons Woods in Wokingham, these are our local woods and are very popular for finding and hiding painted rocks. We also love to make our own nature trails here.

3. Windsor Castle, this is a great day out, can you believe we have a castle right on our doorstep!
