A Berkshire Mumpreneur // Jem Piggott, Tinkers

Tell me briefly about your business?

Tinkers creates quirky character minifig box frames for all occasions.

Tell me briefly about yourself and your family?

Hey, I’m Jem…wife to hero geek Jon, Mummy to small sassy Fae and very happy bubs Reu, small biz owner and the best boss in the world! (Being a one man band I have to say that!)

When did you set up your business and why?

I was on maternity leave from my “real job” in recruitment and had made a frame for my hubs to showcase his superhero figures (mainly because they were annoying me on the window sill!), after posting a picture on social media I had lots of requests to make some for friends and family and that’s when Tinkers was born! That was in 2016 and I haven’t looked back since – no more recruitment telesales calls for me!

What do you see as the benefits of being self-employed?

Being able to watch my babies grow up! Fae is 4 and Reu is 6 months so being able to fit my work around them has been amazing. I know that all the hard work I put into Tinkers is only benefiting me and my family, a huge tick in my book.

How do you manage to run your business and look after your family?

Not going to lie, sometimes it’s tricky but I’m very lucky to have two very easy children and a fantastic husband so that helps enormously but it’s a real juggling act during my busy periods. Sometimes something has to give and 9 times out of 10 it’s the house cleaning!

What are your top tips to other parents considering setting up their own business?

Do it! Many of my friends who have taken a leap of faith and set up businesses since becoming parents and have said it’s the best thing they’ve ever done and

I join them in that.

My top tip would be… make sure you try and keep your work and home life separate (to a certain degree) – a good work/life balance is key! Oh, and time management – something I’m shocking at, but 2020 is my year to attempt to be on time.

What’s next for your business?

Watch this space! A new line of frames will be launched soon (fingers crossed!) Exciting times and something that’s been bubbling away for a while now.

Finally, what are your top three things to do as a family in Berkshire?

Heading into The Lexicon is a top contender for our family, especially when they have things on for the kids. We are very lucky to live so close to it.

The Look Out is great for a day out. Even in the rain. You have the Discovery Centre, the park and obviously the forest, fab to tire small humans out.

And if we’re ever lost you’ll normally find us at my daughters mother ship watching the pirate show at Legoland, Windsor Resort!
