We recently took a visit to Runnymede, the birth place of Magna Carta and below share 10 family-friendly things to do at the Runnymede National Trust. We really enjoyed our visit and explore. To access you don’t need to be a member of the National Trust you just pay to park at the parking meter or via an app. If you are a member you get free parking.
Runnymede is the home of the Magna Carta – King John signed the document here in 1215.

Here are 10 family-friendly things you can do at Runnymede National Trust
- Help fill up the bug house – there is a bug hotel which you are invited to help fill up in the little woodland between the wooden map and the willow sculptures.
2. Visit the art instillations – Haymaker which is a 16 piece willow sculpture which depicts a pre-industrial rural scene and also The Last Survivors which are three impressive willow sculptures you can go inside, they are showing a lady releasing a dove.
3. Visit The Jurors – the 12 bronze chairs are a piece of artwork which celebrate the endurance of Magna Carta and were placed at Runnymede to mark 800 years since the sealing of Magna Carta at Runnymede. The chairs were installed in 2015.
4. Walk to Writ to Water – a fabulous interactive architectural artwork celebrating science, nature and history. It’s a great place for photographs and a moment of calm. You can listen to the water running, look through the hole in the ceiling to see the sky and read the writing in the reflection.
5. Walk to the Air Forces Memorial – a poignant place for reflection. With incredible views of the River Thames plus Heathrow airport and London in the distance.
6. Complete the Nature Knights Trail Sheet.
7. Find the willow sculptures dotted around the site and also the bugs and wildlife on the wooden information boards.
8. Visit the Magna Carta Tea Room – we enjoyed an ice cream when we visited but there is a selection of food and drink. There are tables inside and outside the Tea Room.
9. Enjoy a picnic – there are picnic table areas near the river and the car parks.
10. Watch the River Thames or go for a walk – if you cross the road from the main car park you are right next to the River Thames, there are benches so you can sit and watch the river or you could go for a walk up to the Runnymede Pleasure Ground where there are more family-friendly activities to do. At the river you can also take a trip a French Brothers Victorian Paddle Steamer during the spring and summer months.

You will find the Magna Carta Tea Room and toilets. Plus two car parks and picnic benches.
What else is there to do nearby?
We visited Runnymede at the end of April and the bluebells in the woodland near Writ to Water were stunning.

What is the address and is there car parking?
You will find the Runnymede National Trust site at – Windsor Road, near Old Windsor, Surrey, SL4 2JL (Sat Nav: TW20 0AE). There are two car parks – one on either side of the road.
